Clay Brick RPA – Constantia Waldorf School Hall

The Constantia Waldorf School’s dance and primary school hall showcases the versatility of Corobrik’s clay face brick, blending function, form, and mood. The 250m² hall, constructed with 60,000 Cape Blend Travertine bricks, seamlessly integrates with the surrounding buildings and creates a gentle aesthetic. White cement between the bricks further enhances this soft appearance.

Architect Keith Struthers aimed for the hall’s design to reflect the dynamic nature of dance, using undulating brick lines and sculptural forms to mimic movement. The bricks are laid in a unique way, deviating from traditional horizontal coursing and forming helix patterns to match the curved roof and walls. This intricate design required custom templates and precise cutting on-site.

Beyond aesthetics, the clay bricks contribute to the hall’s acoustics and thermal insulation, ensuring comfort throughout the year. The exterior is adorned with 16,000 Corobrik Meadow pavers, which provide visual variation and enhance safety with their skid-resistant quality.

The project, completed in nine months by Cape Town’s Natural Architecture, stands as a testament to the adaptability and artistry of clay bricks in modern architecture.
