Zero – Conventional masonry without visible joints

  1. Calculate Brick Size:
Measure 10 random bricks, calculate average length, and add joint thickness (3-4 mm). Use this as a reference for the facade.
Tip: Mix bricks from multiple packs for consistency.
  2. Calculate Course Size:
Stack 10 bricks, divide total height by 10, and add joint thickness.
Tip: Always mix bricks from different packs.
  3. Choose Mortar:
Use standard mortar for Zero® bricks as the special hole increases bonding strength.
Tip: Ensure bricks are wind-dry before use.
  4. Mortar Colour:
Use darker mortar for shadow effects or matching mortar for a uniform look.
  5. Tilt the Bricks:
Tilt each brick from front to back to evenly spread mortar, avoiding excess on the front edges.
  6. Damp Proofing:
Place moisture-proof foil and XPS insulation between brick layers below ground to prevent rising moisture.
  7. Provide a Vertical Dam:
Use waterproof foil and draught strips between windows and brickwork to block water infiltration.
  8. Use Closers:
For mismatched wall lengths, use longer or equal-length bricks as closers for a seamless finish.
  9. Joists and Lintels:
  • Visible: Place bricks on top of joists, adjusting window casements.
  • Hidden: Lay bricks upside down to maintain course measurements.
  1. Expansion Joints:
  • Straight: 5 mm or 10 mm openings with foam cords and sealers.
  • Stepped: Guide with foil or foam for independent wall movement.
  1. Garden/Freestanding Walls:
Use an open cavity construction to prevent the see-through effect.
  2. Flat Roofs:
Lay the top layer of bricks with the mortar bed down for a flat substrate.
